What is a zombie? Stories of zombies originated in afro-carribean spiritual beliefs of Voodoo practices. Zombies were belived to still be alive and basically "living slaves" who have had their soul stolen by Shamanic medicine. Belief of zombies in the middle ages was that of the living dead walking the earth, usually to avenge some type of crime, most likely a murder. Todays zombies that we are familiar with made popular by George A Romero, are cannibalistic, rotting corpses looking for some flesh to feast on. The concensus is that zombies do not need brains, just the flesh of a living person. Once a person is bitten by a zombie he does not instantly turn into a zombie; it is only after the wounds result in death that the victim becomes one of the walking dead. Sometimes a victim is ripped apart and dismembered while alive and has no chance of becoming a zombie. The only way to stop a zombie is to destroy the brain. Zombies are not smart, they have only their primal instincts to lead them, and they are not fast, but the sheer number of them is what makes them so terrifying. In the past 30 years, countless zombie movies have been made. Some of the classics include George Romero's Living Dead movies (Dawn of the Dead widely considered the greatest zombie movie of all time). Cult classics such as Fulci's Zombie have made zombies in horror movies a favorite of horror fans all over. Recently, zombie movies have been making a major comeback in Hollywood movies with films such as 28 Days, Land of the Dead, and even in zombie comedies (zombedies) such as Shawn of the Dead.
